West Side of Lake Michigan
This region is reported to have gold in the black sand lenses, with an average of 0-30 flakes per bucket.
Regulations for Recreational Gold Panning and Sluicing on Lake Michigan
Allowed Areas
Recreational gold panning and sluicing are permitted on state land, but some areas are closed to protect critical habitats, including state-designated trout streams, natural rivers, and natural areas.
Equipment Restrictions
Powered sluice boxes and dredges are not allowed for gold prospecting on Lake Michigan. Only hand tools like gold pans and sluice boxes are permitted.
