It is situated around two lakes, North Twin Lake and South Twin Lake, which are part of the North Raccoon River watershed, a tributary of the Des Moines River. Twin Lakes State Park occupies the surface area of the two lakes plus small portions of the shoreline.
The Birth of Twin Lakes Township
Twin Lakes Township, which includes a portion of the Twin Lakes community, was created in 1877 and takes its name from the two lakes near the northeastern corner. The township covers an area of 36.82 square miles (95.4 km2) and contains one incorporated settlement, Rockwell City. Part of the census-designated place of Twin Lakes occupies the northeast portion of the township, surrounding South Twin Lake. According to the USGS, the township contains one cemetery, Twin Lakes.
